What You Should Know about Housing Vouchers as a Student

A significant number of people know that the Section 8 Housing Voucher provides quality accommodation at reduced rates to low earners.  But not enough people know that this housing voucher is available to some students. In this article, you would be enlightened on what getting the housing voucher entails, as a student.

The first thing you should know is that this voucher is only available to people who meet the income requirements for each state. Additionally, for college students, you must be over the age of 24. However, if you are 24 years old (or older) and you are married or if you have a child or a dependent, there is a possibility that you might be eligible for the housing assistance voucher.

You should know that the voucher pays a considerable percentage of your rent to your landlord, while you are expected to pay the remaining percentage. In some cases, the voucher covers the entire rent to be paid.

Although, if you want an alternative to the Section 8 Housing Voucher, there is the Section 42 Housing Voucher. This voucher requires that your family’s income must be between 30% and 60% of the average national income. With this voucher, 70% of your utility bills are paid for, leaving you with only 30% to finance.

To apply for either of these vouchers, you need to confirm your eligibility for these vouchers. This is because eligibility can differ, based on the circumstance of each person and for each state. Contact a Housing and Urban Development field office for more information.
